Duvet Covers and How To Put Them On

A duvet cover, much like a pillowcase over your pillow, is a protective sheet that covers your duvet. The duvet usually looks like a quilt, making it difficult to differentiate from a comforter, but comforters do not have a protective cover. This is where the duvet cover comes in.

Duvet covers can come in different fabrics, such as cotton, flannel, or fleece. The cover itself is soft and fluffy, adding to the comfort a duvet gives. In addition, it helps prevent your duvet from getting dirty quickly, and having a duvet cover minimizes the need to wash your duvet constantly. Duvet covers can be closed using snaps, but there is also a duvet cover with buttons and a duvet cover with zipper.

Before we go into the specifics of a duvet cover, let us first discuss what a duvet is made of. Typically, there are two parts: the duvet shell and the duvet filler. The duvet shell is also called ticking and is commonly made of cotton or synthetic fibers. It also has a high thread count, the lowest being 300, to ensure the filling is always kept inside.

The duvet filler is the material that goes inside the ticking, and it can come in a variety of materials such as feathers, down, wool, silk, microfiber, polyester, or cotton. Some duvet fillers can also come in a combination of two or more of these materials.

Putting A Duvet Together

So, how to put a duvet cover on easily? There are two methods on how to insert duvet into the cover: the traditional method and the rolling method. Here are some tutorial steps to assist you with putting a duvet cover on.

The Traditional Method

Step 1. Lay the duvet on top of your bed.

Step 2. Turn the cover inside out and have the opening at the bottom of your bed. Then, place it directly on top of the duvet.

Step 3. Reach into the duvet cover, grabbing the duvet in the process. Keep reaching until you have the corners of the duvet in both of your hands.

Step 4. Ease the duvet cover onto the duvet, using your hands and the edges of the duvet as a guide.

Step 5. Once the top corners of the duvet are inside the cover, hold them tightly and start to shake the cover onto the duvet. You can pull both sides of the duvet cover once it reaches the bottom of the duvet and fasten its zippers, snaps, or buttons.

Step 6. Spread the duvet on your bed and run your hands through it to ensure no uneven bumps.

The Rolling Method

Step 1. Turn your duvet cover inside out, like in the traditional method. Make sure that the opening is at the top of your bed, away from you.

Step 2. Place the duvet on top of the duvet cover, and fasten the corners together using buttonholes or elastics.

Step 3. Roll the duvet and its cover from the bottom of the bed to the headboard, ensuring an even roll.

Step 4. Reach into the cover and flip it onto the duvet. Even it out on both ends, using your hands to guide the duvet into the cover.

Step 5. Unroll the duvet and the cover and flatten any bumps by spreading your hands over the surface.

It is not easy to put on a duvet cover. A lot of people still struggle with putting a cover on their duvets despite having one for years. If you are one of those people, refer to the two methods listed above.
